A bit of history first: Raleigh’s Superbe model has been top of the range for the British brand for a century. It was the incarnation of maximum quality and reliability that Raleigh earned by the time. This is the modern, XXI century version. If you love vintage looks but prefer to rely in modern mechanics, this could be your ideal bike. LOOKS: the looks certainly seem like the old bikes from 1930. Really retro. Frame is made of lugged steel (like the good old days). Nice detailing in painjob with gold-red strippes and matching mudgards. Bars provide a lovely Dutch-style, along with the chainguard and dressguard. A proper 70s Middlemore leather saddle has been fitted, matching with leather Brooks bar tape. Front basket is new. MECHANICS: the revolution is here. This bike has been designed to be absolutely trouble-free, really low maintenance. Shifting comes in form of a modern Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub. All internal, out of the elements so maintenance is reduced to a mínimum. Same applies to chain, totally enclosed, which is kept well lubricated whatever the weather conditions. And finally the brakes, internal also (drum brake mechanism). Therefore braking performance is always constant even if it is raining or snowing outside. A truly all-weather bike. ACCESSORIES: There is a lovely bell, chainguard, mudguards, dressguard, side stand, rear pannier rack, Dutch-style integrated lock and a new front basket . Especial mention to the lighting system. It is powered by a dinamo enclosed in the front wheel. No need to buying batteires or removing the lights everytime you park the bike to avoid them getting stolen. CONDITION: Very good. Just serviced for the sale, with new Schwalbe tyres just fitted, a new gear cable, brakes/gears adjusted, tyres pumped up, chain lubricated and new basket. Nothing to fix, just cycle away. However note that it is a few years old now and there are a few scratches in frame and the odd rusty spot, but nothing major or that you cannot expect in a used bike. Main disadvantage of this bicycle is the weight. Being so solidly constructed and having so many accessories don’t expect it to be lightweight! It is pretty heavy so not ideal if you want to go fast or need to carry the bike over the stairs. However, if you don’t care much about raw speed and give priority to confort and reliability, this could be perfect for you. Price new is £550. Selling for nearly a third of the price. No offers.
