Antique Copper Pot, large ’sieve', rare Georgian 18th c, planter, log basket or kitchen wall decor in London, Essex for sale
This is a truly magnificent round copper basin that could be used for logs or general storage indoors or as a planter in conservatory or garden. Or best of all, hang in it on a kitchen wall as a stunning focal point. It looks like a massive sieve and the copper is beautiful – best left exactly as it is, just polish with soft cloth to preserve its antique patina. It is in fact an 18th century confectioner's 'Balancing Pan' and was used to make Regency Sugar Plums – a very popular and luxurious sweetmeat (French Dragées)that took several days to make. "They use the same utensils and tools as in England, and have a copper basin, or pan, with handles at the side and at both ends in iron; two cords are attached to a balance, to which the pan is slung by two pieces of iron formed like an S; this is called the balancing pan." The base is perforated with lots of holes which would have allowed the excess syrup to fall through. Visit the Jane Austin website to learn more and search for 'visions of sugar plums'. Beautifully made, it has the wonderful dark tone of truly antique copper and we have left it just as we found it. There is a certain amount of verdigris on the base as the previous owner used it as a planter. This could be cleaned up although we think it all adds to the individual character of this piece. One handle is missing - it probably went a long time ago from constant use when the pan would have hung on chains. However this does not affect its usability or charm. It is worthy of being in a museum and would make a striking focal point and talking piece.
